Thomas DiCicco
Retired as a satellite communications engineer, I continued as a volunteer firefighter, but found a need for a hobby. In 2018, at age 68, I tried my hand at painting with acrylic.
Beginning with known impressionists, I self taught my skills through the paintings of Van Gogh and others from that period. After completing numerous still life and landscapes, I sought new inspiration. Geometric and abstract art was quite interesting to me.
While giving geometric and abstract a try, I found I could be more creative and painted several large abstract and geometric works of my own. The inspiration for these was a blend of various artists’ styles. One artist, Dana Gordon, greatly influenced my early abstract paintings.
I soon became intrigued with artists such as Kandinsky and Klee, who astonishingly produced abstract works more than 100 years ago. I selected some of their collections that stood out to me. Over the last two years, I painted four of their famous works (adding some changes in colors and patterns) and completed the Kandinsky’s “White Painting” (1923), Kandinsky’s “Blue Painting” (1924), and Kandinsky’s “Yellow Painting” (1938). Presently, I am in the process of finishing my first Paul Klee’s “Temple Gardens” (1920).
Painting has become an important part of my retirement, especially in the fall and winter months!
